Hands-on Landscape Design Workshop

w/Judith Irven, Landscape Designer and Vermont Certified Horticulturist

This workshop will help you communicate with your clients about your ideas for their gardens and create relevant designs for them, either with an on-the-spot sketch or with a scale drawing.  The workshop will run a total of four hours and is divided into two sections, covering the following topics:

1. Create a spatial design that balances aesthetics and practicalities

  • Measure and draw a base plan
  • Develop the ground plan
  • Size landscape components
  • Use retaining walls and steps to manage slopes

2. Match plants for the space and develop a planting plan

  • Understand plant hardiness and exposure
  • Review some of the best woody plants for Vermont (we will use the UVM book ‘Landscape Plants for Vermont’ as a class study guide)
  • Use the internet for plant research
  • Develop a planting plan for woody plants
  • Add perennials (quantity and spacing)

We begin each section with a slide presentation, brought to life with photographs from Vermont gardens related to the principles involved in each topic.  Then each person will develop a design for a real garden (a case study) with the opportunity to share his or her results with the rest of the class.   Individual feedback will be provided during the workshop as participants work on their case-study designs.   This workshop is limited to 20 participants and pre-registration is required. The cost is $30/members; $35 non-members.

Tools Needed:  Please bring a drawing pencil, eraser, architect’s rule and circle template, available at any stationary shop. These are all relatively inexpensive items will be useful for later design work.  If possible also bring a laptop or tablet, and a copy of ‘Landscape Plants for Vermont’, by UVM Professors Norman Pellett and Mark Starrett, (available through the UVM Master Gardener website for $19.95:  http://www.uvm.edu/mastergardener/?Page=LPV/LPV.html).
