Presenters
Dr. Nina Bassuk , Professor and Program, Leader of the Urban Horticulture Institute at Cornell University. Dr. Bassuk’s research includes street tree selection, evaluation and diversity, development and application of a load-bearing soil mix to use under pavements, CU-Structural Soil and transplanting and establishment of shrubs and trees.
Peter Trowbridge, MLA, RLA, Professor and Chair, Department of Landscape Architecture, Cornell University. Peter is a principal in the firm of Trowbridge and Wolf Landscape Architects and Planners in Ithaca, NY. This 10 person firm focuses on higher education and health care with several successful green roof and LEED certified projects. Trowbridge is a fellow of the ASLA, Chair of the Landscape Architecture Accreditation Board and has won numerous awards for his design work.

Strategies for dealing with difficult conditions.

10:45 Hands-on Experience
This will cover assessment techniques you can do on site, including measuring pH and other soil characteristics.
11:45-12:30 Lunch

12:30 – Strategies for Soil Amelioration
Discussion on soil amendment, structural soil, soil replacement, surface treatments, drainage and details.
2:30-2:45 – Break
2:45 Tree Selection and Transplanting in Difficult Sites
3:30 – 4:30 Street Tree and Site Assessment Walking Tour
Evaluation of site and tree conditions. Implications for design. Try out site assessment techniques discussed.
