If you struggle with how to coach people or give them feedback, particularly in sensitive situations, this session will teach you the secrets of strength-based feedback: proven, criticism-free way to communicate with people in ways that create real behavior and performance change, without getting them defensive.

“The Distressing Diseases of 2011 and Updates from the Agency of Ag” w/Tim Schmalz. Tim will discuss the diseases that have wreaked havoc this season and what to be on the look out for the fall and next spring.   Tim will also discuss Agency of Ag updates that will be affecting our industry in the future.  Earns one (1) pesticide credit.

“The Medley of Insect Pests From the 2011 Season” w/Jon Turmel, VT State Entomologist.
Jon’s presentation will concentrate on the monitoring, detection, and control of invasive insects we have encountered this season and are up against in the near future. Jon will talk about what is on the horizon and how we can prepare for the insects that plague us.
Earns one (1) pesticide credit.

Richard S. Gallagher

Rich Gallagher is one of the nation’s leading experts on communications skills. Tim Schmalz

Tim Schmalz has been the VT State Plant Pathologist since October, 2005. Prior to becoming plant pathologist, Tim worked in environmental and groundwater protection as a private consultant in VT, VA, NJ and PA. After moving to VT in 1994, it became clear that Tim’s interests lay more in plant and forest protection. His education background includes a BA in Geology from Colgate University, an MS (in- progress) in Forest Pathology and a GIS from UVM. His Master’s research focuses on statistical and spatial patterns of butternut canker dis- ease in VT.
Jon Turmel

Jon Turmel is the Vermont State Entomologist and keeps watch over pest developments for our industry. Jon is also an adjunct faculty lecturer at the University of Vermont.
