When Ed Burke purchased Rocky Dale Gardens in 2004, the display gardens established in 1981 were already showing signs of overcrowding, invasive plant spread, and years of deferred management and maintenance. The nursery itself also needed revitalization, particularly in restoring its reputation for specimen conifers and other unique, hard-to-find plant material.

While balancing the demands of his landscaping business in Minneapolis, Ed worked on the gardens whenever time allowed while steadily rebuilding the nursery. After 20 years at Rocky Dale, the gardens have evolved, and he now sees a clear direction for their future.

Inheriting a mature garden requires countless decisions. Come see what has been preserved, hear about what has been removed, and discover the new ideas beginning to take shape throughout the landscape. Notable mature woody specimens include European beeches, magnolias, stewartias, and numerous conifers.
