Grow Wild: Trialing Lawn Alternatives at Burlington Cemeteries

September 25, 2024 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Join us for an enlightening evening as we explore sustainable landscaping practices . In 2022, Grow Wild was invited to assist with trialing lawn alternatives on steep banks within Burlington’s cemeteries. They planted directly into the existing turf to preserve native plants, reduce soil disturbance, and minimize their carbon footprint.

Their trials include planting shrub thickets, such as a “bearberry thicket” under conifers, to eliminate the need for mowing. This year, they are expanding their efforts with two new “low mow” trials: a “low prairie look lawn,” which will require only annual high mowing, and a large meadow area, part of which will be mowed annually to maintain habitat.

During the event, they will share their successes and challenges, including issues with lawn blisters, crabgrass, ground ivy, black locust sprouts, and bird-dropped seedlings, along with our evolving solutions. This is a unique opportunity to learn about ecological landscaping and discuss the future of these trials with fellow enthusiasts.
