Our keynote speaker is Wambui Ippolito, a landscape   designer, horticulturist and a graduate of the New York Botanical Garden’s School of Professional Horticulture. She develops programming for museums, public gardens, and parks exploring the broader context of horticulture, focusing on the intersections between migration, design, history, culture and science. Wambui lectures both in the USA and internationally. In her former career, she worked as a Development & Democracy Consultant at international organizations both in the USA and around the world. She is multilingual, fluent in five languages. Wambui is also the founder of the BIPOC Hort Group, a multicultural professional organization with membership from the USA, Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean.

THE DAY also includes educational presentations from Angie Clelan and Scott Fisher of North Creek Nurseries, Dan Segal, owner of The Plantsmen Nursery, Mark Dwyer of Landscape Prescriptions, MD, and Ray DeFeo, Prides Corner Farm and Ralph Fitz-Gerald, Horsford Nursery.   

There are three time slots to visit with vendors throughout the day.  Once registered, all attendees will receive an email with instructions on how to access each individual ZOOM presentation on February 11, 2021 as well as how to visit with vendors.   Please note that all registrants will be able to view the recording of this day-long meeting at a later date and will receive information on how to access the recording. 

ATTENDEE COST:  $50 - VNLA Member; $60 - non-Member.  Each additional attendee per business is $35-VNLA member; $45-non-member.  Students are no charge.

9:00 -10:30 am – Keynote Address w/Wambui Ippolito, landscape designer.  

“Migrant Landscapes: The History of The American Terrain”. Wambui’s presentation will focus on the three American immigrant waves and their relationships to American landscapes. Her hope is to birth a new understanding of our connection to Nature by drawing on the ancestral land memory of all Americans.

1:00 – 1:30 pm – VNLA/Green Works Industry Award Winners Presentation of Projects.  The winners of the 2020 Industry Awards Program will present their winning entries complete with a description of their project and photos.

2:15 - 3:15 pm - “Tour the Living Laboratory of North Creek Nurseries"w/Angie Clelan and Scott Fisher. For over 30 years, North Creek Nurseries has served as the go-to wholesale plug supplier of perennials, ferns, grasses, and vines for the horticultural and landscape markets. Their plants are chosen for both their aesthetic appeal and their ability to be used in ecological applications. Join Angie and Scott for a virtual walk around North Creek Nurseries, in Landenberg, Pennsylvania, as they take you on a journey through North Creek's Living Laboratory. The garden spaces you will encounter were built as a way for customers to enjoy the beauty of their product mix while observing the various ways plants can provide solutions in the landscape.

North Creek’s plant trial program puts plants to the test as they work to ensure that their plant offerings are not only garden worthy, but connects horticulture with ecology. Plants are evaluated for aesthetic appeal, longevity in the landscape, pollinator value, and how well the plants play with others. In their quest to be good stewards of the environment, North Creeks plants are a major component in their  stormwater management practices. Today’s journey will include a close look at the vegetation in their rain garden, bio-swale, constructed wetland, and retention ponds with a few stops to point out standout species from each of these areas.

From there, Scott and Angie will lead you through the trial gardens where plants are evaluated in landscape settings such as their meadow and living wall with side-by-side genera evaluations and their new-to-market breeder introductions area.  Put on your virtual walking shoes, grab a notebook, and join Angie and Scott in the Living Learning Laboratory at North Creek Nurseries.


2:15 - 3:15 pm - “The Beautiful Adaptations of Native Plants” w/ Dan Segal, owner of The Plantsmen Nursery. Join Dan for a presentation on native plants in the wild where he will discuss how their traits, which we tend to view as aesthetic, have origins in ecological adaptations to their regional habitats. Dan’s goal in this exploration is to help people understand that when we focus on site conditions and habitat first, we can make better and wiser choices for native plants, which will result in better success and performance in the landscape.




3:30 - 4:30 pm - “New Plants to Look for in 2021” w/Mark Dwyer, Landscape Prescriptions, MD. With so many new plants being promoted for the consumer every year, it's challenging to determine some of the more exciting offerings from the deluge of trials and promotions.  With another strong gardening season ahead, identifying and acquiring these plant treasures is certainly a goal for both the supplier and customer.  Mark will discuss some of the most exciting annuals, perennials and woody plants coming out on the market and discuss their attributes and appeal.





3:30 - 4:30 pm - “Plastic Pot Recycling Pilot Program in Vermont” - Join Ray DeFeo of Prides Corner Farm and Ralph Fitz-Gerald of Horsford Gardens & Nursery for a presentation on the launch of a pilot program to recycle empty plastic nursery containers in Vermont and beyond. This program is in collaboration with Prides Corner Farm.  The VNLA is excited to bring forth this program in creating viable recycling solutions for nursery containers.

Angie Clelan is a Regional Sales Manager at North Creek Nurseries, a progressive wholesale nursery specializing in perennial, fern, vine, and ornamental grass plug production with an emphasis on Eastern regional native plants. For the past 13 years, Angie has worked in a variety of roles at North Creek including, growing, customer service, and sales. Prior to joining North Creek, Angie worked in various facets of horticulture including public gardens at Brookside Gardens in Wheaton, MD, landscape contracting, retail, and private estate gardening.

Scott Fisher joined the North Creek team in 2013 as the Ecological Sales Representative, assisting customers specifying Landscape Plugs™ (LP50 and LP32). In addition to his role at North Creek, Scott has spent the last decade as a docent at Mt. Cuba Center. At both North Creek and Mt. Cuba Center, Scott leads small group tours to educate and inspire customers and garden enthusiasts on the benefits of native plants. Scott’s passion shines through on these tours, as he conveys his extensive knowledge of the plants displayed a variety of garden environments, and their attributes and the vital role they play in the creation of biodiversity ecosystems. Scott has a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from Temple University. As a youth growing up in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, Scott’s child’s play was captivated by nature. This has evolved into an affinity and desire to see the continuation of this play for Scott today as well as for future generations. Away from the office, you can find Scott working in his home garden and instilling his appreciation for nature in his little girl, Juniper.

Dan Segal, along with his wife Sarah, are the owners of The Plantsmen Nursery since 2006 located in Ithaca, NY. They have grown their roots in the community at large by supporting dozens of youth groups, schools and local charities; pioneering a safe and healthy No-Spray Growing Program at the nursery; offering various free educational programs sharing expertise and plants; and cultivating a network of local vendors that help keep The Plantsmen running smoothly. Dan is a National Board Member of Wild Ones, an organization dedicated to the conservation and appropriate use of native plants.  Dan founded and hosts the Ithaca Native Landscape Symposium, which is attended by over 100 Landscape Architects every winter. Dan and Sarah have three children: Aaron, Sofia and Charlie.  Aaron has begun helping out at the nursery.  Sofia has been creating signs for a few years.  Charlie is in charge of Firefly, our nursery feline.

Mark Dwyer is the owner of Landscape Prescriptions MD, a landscape design consulting business. Mark also travels the country speaking and conducting workshops. Mark has a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana (1993) and a master’s degree in urban forestry from the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point (1996). His professional experience includes time spent working at a garden center and nursery (Appleton, WI) followed ultimately by a rewarding transition to public horticulture. He spent two years working at Fernwood Botanical Garden & Nature Preserve (Niles, MI) as a grounds horticulturist in charge of maintaining four garden spaces along with involvement in education and special events. More recently, he spent 21 years as Director of Horticulture at Rotary Botanical Gardens (Janesville, WI). He was responsible for the continued development and maintenance of this 20 acre, non-profit botanical garden along with a talented grounds staff and many dedicated volunteers. He designed the last seven gardens at Rotary Botanical Gardens with the most recent being the well-received Wellness Garden. He was heavily involved with volunteer recruitment, management, retention as well as a wide range of special events management and facilitation. In addition, he has consistently been involved with private landscape design (residential and commercial) for over 25 years and enjoys keeping current in landscape design and the use of innovative plant materials and design features for beauty, form and function.

Ray DeFeo joined Prides Corner Farms in 2007. In 2013, Ray became the Sales Manager which prompted a move back to Connecticut after 30+ years living and working in New Hampshire and Maine. Ray’s experience in the green industry includes time in retail garden centers and owning my his own landscape design/build firm prior to his 20+ years as a nursery sales representative working throughout New England. The move placed Ray back amongst his family, having grown up in the southern part of CT. Living between his two grown daughters allows him the opportunity to babysit (better known as ability to spoil) his grandchildren a little easier. When not at work Ray enjoys gardening (of course) along with woodworking and carving. He also like spending time outdoors fishing, boating and golfing in the summer, while during the winter blazing trails snowshoeing, or skating on lakes and ponds.

Ralph Fitz-Gerald is the field manager at Horsford Gardens & Nursery, a nursery/greenhouse business that  encompassing 42 acres in Charlotte, VT.   Ralph has been with Horsford’s for 32 years.


Exhibitor Registration & Information

The Vermont Nursery & Landscape Association/Green Works would like to invite you to VIRTUALLY exhibit at our Annual Winter Meeting and Trade Show on Thursday, February 11, 2021. The meeting will be held via Zoom facilitated by the UVM Conference and Event Services.   We expect 100-150 attendees to visit our Virtual Winter Meeting & Trade Show.

Each exhibitor will have their own Zoom Room where you can show a pre-recorded presentation, in addition to being "live" in the room.   Full tech support from UVM will be available to help with a presentation of your choosing and to help with set up in your Zoom Room.  

Each exhibitor will be able to sign up for two out of three time slots:  8:30am-9:00 am; 10:30am-11:00am; or 1:30-2:00pm.  Exhibitors can also attend any of the presentations throughout the day. Once registered, you will be contacted regarding available time slots.

Please complete the registration form by January 29, 2021.  There is a limit of 16 exhibitors; first come first serve.


The cost to exhibit for the day is $100 for members and $150 for non-members.
