Friends of the Horticulture Farm

The Friends of the Horticulture Farm is a grassroots organization dedicated to protecting, enhancing and promoting the significant plant collections and natural areas of the UVM Horticultural Research Center in South Burlington, Vermont for education, research, and public enrichment.The Hort. Farm is open to visitors during public events and by appointment. A current list of events can be found at the Friends of the Hort Farm website. The group, composed of interested citizens, local garden club members, professional horticulturists, and landscape architects, is working in partnership with the University of Vermont to develop both short-term and long-term plans to provide for the stewardship of this wonderful and important resource. The Friends also sponsors public programs, and engages in fundraising and collections preservation. Volunteers are needed for these and other activities. The Friends publish a quarterly newsletter and a calendar for the year.Special Collections and Points of Interest:- Cary Award Garden, Crabapple Collection, Apples – Ongoing research is being conducted on apple scab, apple replant disease, cultivar/rootstock combinations, and the Vermont Lattice System, Lilac Collection – The lilac collection includes 90 kinds of lilacs ranging from 3 feet to 15 feet in height, Other Woody Plant Collections – Rhododendrons, conifers, viburnums and many other kinds of trees and shrubs are represented in the plant collections, Perennials – A display border of a large number of labeled perennial plants useful in Vermont gardens is located near the parking area, Natural Areas – The woodlands, meadows, ponds and orchards offer a diverse habitat for wildlife, Common Ground Student-Run Educational Farm – This CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm, started in 1994, is organized and run by UVM students, with the guidance of faculty & staff advisors.
