SUMMARY:VNLA/Green Works Tuesday Twilight Tour: Marijke's Perennial Gardens Plus
DESCRIPTION:POSTPONED UNTIL AUGUST 7\, 2018\nJuly 17\, 2018\n5:30 – 7:30 pm\nMarijke’s Perennial Gardens Plus\n1299 Robert Young Road\nStarksboro\, VT 05487 \nRefreshments will be served.\nJoin VNLA member and Marijke’s Perennial Gardens Plus owner Marijke Niles for a tour of her small perennial plant operation that specializes in low maintenance and nature-nourishing plants as well as hardy succulents. The succulents are used to create whimsical containers. \nThe site is located on an eight acre property in a spectacular mountain setting. Starting with a blank slate 18 years ago\, the site has grown into a haven for wildlife with many native plantings. It truly is a place ‘where the wild things grow’.   All gardens emphasize nature\, wild life and recycling of sources. \nMarijke propagates most of the plants for sale. The property features 40 larger and small gardens. \nThere will be a demonstration on how to plant a succulent container after the garden tour.  To learn more about Marijke’s business visit:  http://www.perennialgardensplus.com. \nThere is no charge for this tour.  Please RSVP with kristina@greenworksvermont.org. \n

SUMMARY:Designing Native & Ecological Plant Communities with Claudia West
DESCRIPTION:June 9\, 2018 – Saturday\n9:00am – 4:00 pm\nFourth Corner Foundation\n578 Hitchcock Hill Road\nWindham\, VT 05439\nThis workshop is hosted by Windsor & Windham County UVM Extension Master Gardeners.  The workshop is designed for all audiences – home gardeners\, landscapers and horticulturalists\, land conservation groups\, and others who want to learn about ecological planting design. Registrations are limited to 25 attendees to maximize learning. Lunch is included in the registration fee. \nDesigning Native and Ecological Plant Communities (5 hour workshop) \nFunctional and ecological plantings\, such as rain gardens and meadows\, are gaining in popularity but also face severe challenges. It is time for a new approach — a plant community-based method which has evolved in the world of ecological science. Join Claudia for this day long workshop as she translates ecological principles of wild plant communities into planting design tools that will help you create better planting. This interactive workshop will introduce you to the science behind stable and lasting plant combinations. You will learn the skill of creating plant communities in four hands-on design exercises and practice this technique in a hypothetical planting project at the end of the workshop. \nTo learn more about this workshop and to register please visit:  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/designing-native-ecological-plant-communities-with-claudia-west-tickets-45763446701

SUMMARY:VNLA/Green Works PoP Up Social/Film Screening at BCA
DESCRIPTION:April 18\, 2018 – 6pm\nArchitecture & Design Film Series/Burlington City Arts\nContois Auditorium\n149 Church Street\nBurlington\, VT 05401\nJoin VNLA Vice-President Ashley Robinson and fellow VNLA members for a “plant geek/let’s talk” get together after the sponsored Burlington City Arts film: Five Seasons: The Gardens of Piet Oudolf. Meet Ashley at the auditorium entrance and the group will decide where to dine and talk about plants\, the film and anything else that pops up! \nTHE FILM:  FIVE SEASONS: THE GARDENS OF PIET OUDOLF\nDirected by Thomas Piper\, 2016\, USA\, 70 Minutes\nFood and cash bar at 6pm \nScreening followed by discussion 6:30pm\n \nAdmission: Free \nAbout the Film:  Five Seasons: The Gardens of Piet Oudolf\, immerses viewers in Oudolf’s work and takes us inside his creative process\, from his beautifully abstract sketches\, to theories on beauty\, to the ecological implications of his ideas. Intimate discussions take place through all fours seasons in Piet’s own gardens at Hummelo\, and on visits to his signature public works\, as well as to the far-flung locations that inspire his genius. Piet Oudolf has radically redefined what gardens can be. As Rick Darke\, the famous botanist\, says to Piet in the film\, “your work teaches us to see what we have been unable to see.” Through poetic cinematography and unique access\, Five Seasons will reveal all that Piet sees\, and celebrate all that we as viewers have been unable to see.
