SUMMARY:Plastic Pot Recycling Program
DESCRIPTION:What Can Be Recycled:\nAll containers and plastic pots of any size (1 gal\, 2 gal\, etc.) with the #2 and #5 plastics designation/symbol can be recycled. When bringing pots to VNLA collection sites\, please ensure they are separated into two groups: #2 plastics in one group and #5 plastics in another. Remember\, all pots must be empty\, with no tags or trash\, though they do not need to be cleaned. \nHow Can Pots Be Recycled:\nWhen dropping off pots\, they must be sorted according to their plastic type—#2 plastics and #5 plastics. VNLA members can also opt to construct their own pallets and bring them to the collection sites. Please note that pallets should be no taller than 7 1/2 feet and must be loadable via a forklift. See the provided photo for a reference.

SUMMARY:VNLA Summer Twilight Gathering: Elmore Roots Fruit Tree & Berry Nursery
DESCRIPTION:June 23\, 2022 – Thursday\n6:00 – 8:00 pm\nElmore Roots Fruit Tree & Berry Nursery\n759 Symonds Mill Road\nElmore\, VT  05680\nDavid showing off his roots! \n  \nPlease join us for a tour of Elmore Roots Fruit Tree & Berry Nursery by owner David Fried.  David will also give a tour of a new growing method they have implemented using gravel beds systems that were developed in Missouri.   After 3 years of experimentation they are sharing their success with this new and innovative growing method\, which you won’t want to miss!   There also was a feature article in the 2021 Winter Issue of The Dirt about this.   \nLight refreshments will be served.  Please RSVP with Kristina in the office if you would like to attend:  kristina@vnlavt.org.  There is no fee to attend.  We hope you can join us for a lovely evening! \nAbout Elmore Roots Fruit Tree & Berry Nursery:\nAnika and Ari at work in the gravel beds. \nIn 1981 David was invited to live on the land in Elmore where he planted new orchards and began the nursery. It has expanded into neighboring fields over the years. Back then\, when David approached the local extension agent to see what he could grow here\, he was told not to try any fruit other than a few very hardy apples\, as they surely would not grow. Being a bit stubborn and having the experience of crossing the Sahara Desert and jumping in and out of freight trains in his travels\, he decided he would see for himself what could really grow here. The result is over 40 years of pioneer work in northern Vermont with various fruit trees\, nut trees and berry plants. \nHaving excellent mentors and working over the years with great dedicated young budding horticulturists\, this old hillside dairy farm is now a thriving nursery and food forest. Elmore has been growing northern kiwiberries\, hazelberts\, many kinds of plums and pears and cherries with great success. we make grape juice from our grapes\, jam from our berries\, and supply beer companies with our plums and pears.  Please visit their website to learn more:  https://elmoreroots.com/.\n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Snake Worms in Horticulture - Are There Any Solutions?
DESCRIPTION:October 3\, 2021 – 3:00 – 5:00 pm\nNorth Branch Nature Center\n713 Elm Street\nMontpelier\, VT  05602\nRSVP:  kristina@vnlavt.org\nFREE!  There will be no registration fee however we will gratefully accept donations at the door to cover the cost of the room rental.  \nCOVID POLICIES AT NORTH BRANCH NATURE CENTER:  Masks are required indoors for all staff\, visitors\, and participants; masks are optional outdoors.  You can read more HERE. \nJoin the VNLA and Professor Josef Gorres\, University of Vermont Plant and Soil Science Department on Sunday\, October 3\, 2021 to learn about the invasive snake worms (Amynthas spp.) in Vermont\, which includes: \n\n identifying the tell-tale signs of their presence \nhow to identify snake worms clearly and distinguish them from the lumbricid species that have been introduced from Europe a few centuries ago\ntheir impact on the environment and why they are so numerous in horticulture \nrecent advances in how to manage them. \n\nAnd\, with a bit of luck we will find some live specimens at North Branch and the nearby Montpelier Tree Nursery.   This gathering will take place both indoors and outdoors.   \nMORE ABOUT SNAKE WORMS   \nSnake worms are aggressively invasive earthworms that hail from Japan and Korea and were introduced to North America probably a century ago. In the Northeast they were first described in horticultural settings such as greenhouses and zoological gardens mid-20th century. Now they are found more widely spread at nurseries\, gardens and hardwood forests. They are regarded as a long term threat to the sugar maple industry as they are one factor in the reduction in forest regeneration. Some plant damage has also been reported from containerized plants at nurseries. Customers of horticultural goods are not keen on importing them to their gardens. \nResearchers at the University of Vermont\, including Professor Gorres\,  have been studying these worms for the past 12 years and potential biological controls for the past three years. Especially with respect to biological control there have been some development that may as part of a larger strategy help manage these invaders.  They welcome any VT growers to participate in trials next year.  You can read more about this work HERE. \n
