SUMMARY:2019 VNLA Summer Meeting & Trade Show
DESCRIPTION:2019 SUMMER MEETING\n& TRADE SHOW\nAugust 1\, 2019\nFairfax Perennial Farm\n7 Blackberry Hill Road\nFairfax\, VT  05454\nPRE-REGISTRATION IS CLOSED.\nWALK-IN REGISTRATION WILL BE AVAILABLE.\nPROGRAM\nOur keynote speaker is Larry Weaner.  Larry has been creating native landscapes since 1977. He founded Larry Weaner Landscape Associates in 1982 and has gained a national reputation for combining ecological restoration with garden design traditions. In 2008 he received the top three design awards from the Association of Professional Landscape Designers\, and his work has been profiled in regional and national publications\, including The New York Times. An active guest lecturer and instructor for horticultural and environmental organizations throughout the U.S\, he developed New Directions in the American Landscape\, a conference series dedicated to advancing the art and science of natural landscape design. Larry will be giving two presentations in the morning. \nAfter lunch we will hold our annual “Summer Auction” which helps us fund our educational initiatives and programs.  Following the auction there will be a presentation “Beekeeping in the Nursery and Beyond” w/Ralph Fitz-Gerald of Horsford Gardens & Nursery. The rest of the afternoon will be open for everyone to participate in the “Fairfax Perennial Farm Amazing Race” where you can test your greenhouse/nursery skills and get a real taste of what “perennial farming” is all about.  The complete schedule/details are below as well as registration.  The pre-registration deadline is July 22\, 2019. \nSCHEDULE\n8:00 – 9:00 am – Trade Show Registration \n8:00 -10:30 am – VCH Exam \n9:00 -10:00 am –  Keynote Speaker:  Larry Weaner\, founder of Larry Weaner Landscape Associates – “Finding Your Niche: Establishing an Ecological Focus for Your Firm”. \nDemand for ecologically beneficial landscapes is increasing\, and businesses with an ecological focus realize an expanded client base and an invigorated creative atmosphere.  Offering an ecological approach\, however\, requires knowledge and skills rarely taught in horticulture and design programs.  This presentation guides landscape architects\, designers\, contractors\, and others through what’s needed to establish a respected\, visible presence in the fields of ecological landscape design and management.  Participants gain a new understanding of local plant communities\, learn about design projects modeled on regional ecosystems\, acquire practical design\, restoration\, and management techniques\, and discover new ways grow their skills and businesses. \n10:00 – 10:30 am – Visit with Vendors \n10:30 – 11:30 – “Living in the Liberated Landscape”\, w/Larry Weaner.   \nAll too often in our gardens and landscapes we think of static compositions of carefully placed and managed plants.  But our approach can be more dynamic—and arguably more rewarding—than that by taking advantage of plants’ natural abilities to reproduce and proliferate.  Learn how designer Larry Weaner combines design with the reproductive abilities of plants as well as ecological processes to create compelling\, ever-evolving landscapes that bring new meaning to partnering with nature.  Using examples from his own property as well as diverse client projects\, Larry will share how this give-and-take approach can result in compelling\, low-maintenance landscapes that free plants to perform according to their natural abilities and liberate people from having to cater to their landscapes’ every need. \n11:30 – 12:00 pm – Visit with Vendors/Tour \n12:00 – 1:00 pm – Lunch \n1:00 – 2:00 pm – VNLA/Green Works Live Auction \nPlease consider donating a plant\, book\, tool\, or item of your choice for the live auction! Proceeds from the auction fund horticulture-related education awards the Association grants each year. These students are the future of our industry. Bring your wallet! \n2:00 – 2:30 pm Visit with Vendors \n2:30 – 3:30 pm “Beekeeping in the Nursery & Beyond” \, w Ralph Fitz-Gerald\, Horsford Gardens & Nursery. \nJoin Ralph as he shares one of his passions with us- beekeeping! Learn about what it takes to keep bees\, including the equipment you need to get started. \n3:30 – 4:30 pm – “The Fairfax Perennial Farm Amazing Race”. \nHannah\, Dana\, and their staff have put together a series of tasks where you can test your greenhouse/nursery skills and get a real taste of what “perennial farming” is all about. We will break up into teams and a friendly competition will ensue\, complete with prizes at the end of this Amazing Race! We don’t want to give away too many of the details – be prepared for anything! \nSPEAKER PROFILES\nLarry Weaner has been creating native landscapes since 1977. Soils are one of the most biologically diverse and significant portions of earth’s biosphere. Scientific research on soil biology and chemistry continues to reveal striking insights. During this presentation we will explore how some of the smallest organisms (e.g. microarthropods\, nematodes\, bacteria and fungi)\, hidden away in the tiniest cracks and crevices of the earth\, play such a central role in processes of importance to humanity. In particular\, we will focus on the complex and micro-scale habitats created by soils\, how soil microbes contribute to soil fertility and the impact of soils on the global climate. \n3:00 – 4:30 pm – “Let’s Talk! Business Roundtable Discussions Continue” – Whether you are new to the group or retuning for our 4th year together\, we’re inviting all participants who are interested in listening and sharing their experiences in business. Entrepreneurs\, employees\, managers or those just starting out\, can benefit from this unique opportunity to learn from each other. Bring your questions\, concerns and challenges to the group for answers & reciprocal dialogue among peers. Be energized\, remember your goals and ever stop learning! Facilitators Ashley Robinson and other VNLA board members will help guide the conversation. We look forward to talking! \nOR \n3:30 – 4:30 pm. – “A Survey of Current Issues Affecting Best Management Practices for Enhancing Soil Health” w/Natasha Duarte\, the Director of the Composting Association of Vermont (CAV). Natasha will discuss a variety of topics related to compost and soil health\, including the recent updates to Vermont’s Storm Water Manual and current recommendations for when and how to use different compost and compost products to promote soil health and water quality; lawn care management for resilience in the face of increasing extreme climate events; containment and prevention of snake worm infestations; and more! There will be plenty of time for Q&A throughout the session. \nTHANK YOU TO THE USDA-RISK MANAGEMENT AGENCY FOR THEIR GENEROUS GRANTS AND SUPPORT FOR OUR MEETINGS! \n  \nSPEAKER PROFILES\nDaniel Winterbottom\, RLA\, FASLA is a landscape architect and Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Washington. In 1995 he developed a design/build program\, through which he and his students work with communities to design and build projects that provide amenities\, address social of ecological concerns and provide therapeutic environments for those struggling with traumatic experiences and mental health issues. Mr. Winterbottom developed and incorporates a participatory design process in these service-learning projects to create responsive design solutions for communities in need. His book Therapeutic Gardens:  Design for Healing Spaces\, co-authored with Amy Wagenfeld was released by Timber Press in 2015. His awards include the Council of Educators of Landscape Architecture Outstanding Educator award\, 2007\, the University of Washington 2006 S. Sterling Munro Public Service Teaching Award\, American Society of Landscape Architects Honor Award for Community Service 2007\, ALSA Honor Awards for Community Service 207\, 2011 and 2013\, the EDRA/Places Great Places Award\, 2010 and he was inducted as a Fellow in ASLA in 2011. \n  \n  \nCheryl Frank Sullivan\, MS\, University of Vermont\, Entomology Research Laboratory. Cheryl specializes in the Integrated Pest Management ‘IPM’ of insect pests. She primarily conducts research using plant-based systems to attract and sustain biological control agents in greenhouse-high tunnel-nursery settings. She also assists growers with the development of their IPM programs. Phone: (802) 656-5434\, Email:cfrank@uvm.edu \n  \n  \n  \n  \nBill Landesman is an environmental microbiologist who applies molecular techniques to study how microbial communities – that is\, the assembly of bacteria\, fungi and other microscopic organisms – affect ecosystem processes of importance to humanity. Bill maintains two major areas of research: a) the microbial ecology of Lyme disease and b) the biogeography of soil microbial communities. In recent yearshe has diverted all of his attention to studying the ecological factors affecting the risk of acquiring Lyme disease in Vermont. Specifically\, Bill studies how tick population sizes\, as well as the infection prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi\, the spirochete bacterium that causes Lyme disease\, change over time and space. In addition\, Bill is investigating a potential link between the composition of the tick microbiome and the probability that a tick is a carrier for Borrelia burgdorferi. His research is carried out in collaboration with a team of undergraduate researchers at Green Mountain College. When he is not in the field or the lab\, he teaches Ecology\, Microbiology and Soil Ecology. \n  \n  \n \nAshley Robinson is the VNLA Vice-President and was educated at the Landscape Institute in Cambridge MA\, and worked for a renowned landscape architect\, in MA. Ashley has managed several retail flower & garden shops\, then moved to Vermont 10 years ago to start her own landscape design business. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nNatasha Duarte is the Director of the Composting Association of Vermont (CAV); she coordinates with partners for compost and soil health-related outreach and education projects and represents CAV in policy initiatives. CAV sees the use of compost as vital to soil health through practices that contribute to water quality\, plant vigor\, and environmental resilience. Natasha is also the Chair to the Farm to Plate Food Cycle Coalition. She has an M.S. in Soil Science from N.C. State University and a B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Vermont. \n  \n  \n  \nATTENDEE INFORMATION & REGISTRATION\n  \nPre-registration deadline is EXTENDED UNTIL  January 30\, 2019; price goes up at the door after that!\nYou can register below or download the registration form and mail it into the office. \nPARKING:  As part of your registration parking is free.  A permit will be mailed to you a few days prior to the show.  You should display this permit in your window.\n  \n*ONLINE REGISTRATION IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE* \n  \n\n\n  \nEXHIBITOR INFORMATION & REGISTRATION\n  \nThe Vermont Nursery & Landscape Association/Green Works would like to invite you to exhibit at our Annual Winter Meeting and Trade Show on Thursday\, February 7\, 2019. Keep in mind the mileage alone (figured at the federal rate) if you drove would be more than the total price of this tour\, would entail dealing with Montreal traffic\, and wouldn’t even include parking and gardens admission\, as well as the chance to meet and learn from Dr. Perry and others with garden interests–all part of this tour. \nThis display of hundreds of hand-made silk Chinese lanterns is of course stunning at night\, but is even more colorful and easily seen in daylight. Each year the main display represents a new theme and new lanterns\, some floating in the pond\, some over 10 feet high. The theme this year focuses on “Natural Harmony.” This display is found throughout the largest Chinese garden outside China (done in the style of the Ming Dynasty)\, where you’ll also find the largest Penjin (Chinese bonsai) collection in North America. Nearby you’ll find the modernistic Japanese garden\, tea room and bonsai collection; and many specialty gardens such as rock garden\, perennials\, roses\, design ideas\, trees and shrubs. The 11 greenhouses have changing seasonal displays\, and extensive collections of plants such as orchids\, begonias\, ferns and cacti. \nAny family or friends interested in joining you? Send in your registration NOW in order to guarantee seats on this relaxing\, comfortable and educational tour which usually sells out early. If you have any questions or special needs (seating\, accessibility)\, please let me know: 802-318-8453\, leonard.perry@uvm.edu. \nCOSTS\n$98 per person \n$88 per person prior to May 31\, 2018 \n$88 per person prior to Aug. 30 for VNLA/Green Works members and Vermont Master Gardeners) \nTO REGISTER\nThe registration deadline is August 20\, 2018.  To register please download this form and mail it to:   Green Mountain Horticulture Tours\, PO Box 735\, Milton VT 05468. \nDownload Registration Form Here

SUMMARY:VNLA 2018 Summer Meeting & Trade Show Attendee Registration
DESCRIPTION:August 22\, 2018\nShelburne Farms Coach Barn\n8:00 am – 4:00 pm\nPRE-REGISTRATION IS CLOSED. \nWALK-INS WELCOME THE DAY OF ($15/extra the day of) \nLunch will not be available. \nRegistration to take the VCH exam is below.  \nThe Day’s Schedule\n\n8:00 – 9:00 am – Trade Show Registration \n8:00 -10:30 am – VCH Exam \n9:00 -10:00 am – Keynote Address w/Dan Jaffe\, New England Wild Flower Society.  “For Us and Them: Native Plants for Both Us and the Pollinators to Feast Upon” – There are a variety of reasons why people chose to grow plants. The most common reason is often aesthetic in nature. We like the look of a garden\, it gives us a place to relax\, or play\, or drink wine with friends. However simple beauty is not always enough for people\, the popularity of edible and pollinator gardens has skyrocketed of late but these trends can be complicated. Which plants attract which pollinators? Which edibles are resistant to diseases and pests? What if you could have it all? A beautiful\, edible garden that supports a myriad of pollinators\, what if it could be easy? Learn how low maintenance native plants can feed us and the pollinators together. \n
10:00 – 10:30 am – Visit with Vendors/Trade Show \n10:30 am-11:30am – “Lyme Disease\, the Black-Legged Tick\, and its Key Ecological Factors” w/Bill Landesman\, Green Mountain College microbiologist.  Lyme disease is the one of the most common vector borne diseases in the United States\, affecting an estimated 300\,000 people per year. The disease is especially prevalent in Vermont\, which has the second highest rate of Lyme disease reporting in the nation from 2014-2016. Prevention remains a key public health tool but one for which information on transmission risk is urgently needed. In the eastern United States\, Lyme disease is caused by Borrelia burgdorferi\, and transmitted by the bite of an infected black-legged tick (Ixodes scapularis). The black-legged tick may also transmit other pathogens as well. During this presentation we will discuss the life cycle of the black legged tick\, vector-pathogen dynamics that help to maintain Borrelia burgdorferi in nature\, and key ecological factors that influence the risk of disease transmission to humans. Bill will describe some preliminary results of his research\, as well as his research into the tick microbiome – the community of bacteria and other microbes that inhabit the black-legged tick. \n11:30 – 12:00pm – Special Membership Meeting \n12:00 – 1:00 pm – Lunch \n1:00 – 2:00 pm – Green Works Live Auction – Please donate a plant\, book\, tool\, or item of your choice for the live auction! Proceeds from the auction fund horticulture-related education awards the Association grants each year. These students are the future of our industry. Bring your wallet! \n  \n2:00 – 2:30 pm – Visit with Vendors/Trade Show \n  \n2:30 – 3:30 pm “Plants are Better than Mulch” w/ Dan Jaffe. We have a strange relationship with mulch in America. Landscaping often means a sea of red mulch dotted with a few over-pruned arborvitae shrubs. But how many gardeners got into the hobby for a love of mulch? Yet there are good reasons to use mulch\, it helps to control weeds\, prevents soil erosion and maintains soil nutrients. Yet for every advantage that mulch offers well-chosen plants work even better. From groundcovers to larger mat-forming species there is a plant for every area in the garden. Dan will speak about the myriad of plants that can take the place of mulch on your landscape. \nOR \n“Mean Green Products Demonstration on the Lawn” w/ AJ Bavaro\, Church Hill Landscapes\, Inc. and Steven Wisbaum\, Eco-Equipment Supply\, LLC – AJ will talk about Church Hill’s “Greener Lawn Care” program using all electric mowers and trimmers which was launched last year. AJ will share details about the operation\, use and management of these machines. Steve will be on hand to talk about the various product details\, specifications\, environmental benefits and cost savings. \n3:30 – 4:30 pm – “What have we here? A Round up of Pests and Diseases” w/Judy Rosovsky\, VT State Entomologist for a review of pest and diseases that you are likely to encounter on your nursery stock this year. Learn proper identification and cultural\, biological and chemical options for managing these problems. Earns one (1) pesticide credit. \n  \nOR \n  \n3:30 – 4:30 pm – “Shelburne Farms Inn Garden Tour w/ Birgit Deeds\, head gardener. Join Birgit for a tour of the beautiful gardens at the Inn and learn more about the garden restoration project that has been underway for the past few years. \n  \n  \nSpeaker Profiles\nDan Jaffe is the Propagator and Stock Bed Grower at New England Wild Flower Society’s Garden in the Woods. His past experience includes a degree in botany from the University of Maine\, an advanced certificate in Native Plant Horticulture and Design from New England Wild Flower Society\, and nursery management experience.  Prior to his role as propagator Dan spent a year as Plant Sales Coordinator at the Garden after an internship in that same role. Dan Jaffe’s photography has been used in numerous publications and his first book is due to be released this March. \nBill Landesman is an environmental microbiologist who applies molecular techniques to study how microbial communities – that is\, the assembly of bacteria\, fungi and other microscopic organisms – affect ecosystem processes of importance to humanity. Bill maintains two major areas of research: a) the microbial ecology of Lyme disease and b) the biogeography of soil microbial communities. In recent years he has diverted all of his attention to studying the ecological factors affecting the risk of acquiring Lyme disease in Vermont. Specifically\, Bill is studying how tick population sizes\, as well as the infection prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi\, the spirochete bacterium that causes Lyme disease\, change over time and space. In addition\, he is investigating a potential link between the composition of the tick microbiome and the probability that a tick is a carrier for Borrelia burgdorferi. Bill’s research is carried out in collaboration with a team of undergraduate researchers at Green Mountain College. When he is not in the field or the lab\, he teaches Ecology\, Microbiology and Soil Ecology. \nJudy Rosovsky has spent over 30 years finding\, identifying and managing pest species in Vermont\, particularly invasive pest. She received her master’s degree from UVM’s Entomology Research Lab\, and is currently the state entomologist with the Agency of Agriculture\, Food and Markets. Part of her job is inspecting nurseries\, where she is able to get close up and personal with insect pests and diesases. \nBirgit Deeds is the head gardener at Shelburne Farms has has been volunteering there for 39 years. Birgit is a garden designer\, and previously worked for a landscape architect and studied at the Harvard/Radcliffe school. \nDOWNLOAD REGISTRATION FORM HERE.
